Abstract:

Introduction: Malocclusion and bite variations like anterior cross bite represent vital factors, since trauma due to occlusion between the maxillary and mandibulary incisors generate imbalance in the transmission of occlusal forces. Such imbalance leads to variations in the periodontium, making the friable region more prone to mechanical trauma. Aim: To evaluate the association between periodontitis and malocclusion among patients visiting a private dental hospital.  Materials and methods: The present study is a retrospective analysis conducted in a private dental clinic of Chennai. The data was tabulated according to the following criteria: gender, periodontal status and orthodontic status. The SPSS programme version 23 was used for statistical analysis. Descriptive statistics and chi – square tests were used for statistical analysis of data. Results and discussion: Data obtained reflected that deep bite was the highest in both male and female participants, revealing a significant  association between gingival recession and malocclusion. Conclusions: Retrospective analysis evidenced a significant association between the incidence of periodontal disease and malocclusion. Medical interventions to treat malocclusions as early as childhood and earlier diagnosis of periodontitis caused by any other primary disease will symbiotically prevent generalised attrition and trauma during mastication.
