Research on the pathobiology of periodontal diseases has increased our knowledge of this disease and is fostering a transition from the repair model to the medical or wellness model of periodontal care. Successful application of the wellness model depends on an accurate and valid assessment of d isease r isk, a s well as institution of risk reduction as an integral part of prevention and treatment. Risk of developing periodontitis varies among patients, based on many factors including genetics, diabetes, poor oral hygiene, smoking and other.(1) Knowledge of risk factors for periodontitis allows dental health professionals to take preventive action in patients who are at high risk. Effective prevention requires clinicians to recognize high-risk patients.
