The catechins of green tea are considered the most powerful natural antioxidants. The antioxidant activity has a role also in the prevention and in the decrease of the periodontal disease evolution and it occurs through the inhibiting the redox-sensitive transcription factors, through the inhibition of “pro-oxidant” enzymes and even through metal chelation. The synergic activity with antibiotics and that of the inhibition of some matrix metalloproteinases make of the green that of an alternative worthy of taken into consideration.
