Abstract:

The periodontal disease is accompanied by high levels of lipid peroxidation and deficient antioxidant status, with exhaustion of the antioxidant action of the uric acid, gluthatione, ascorbic acid and α-tocopherol. Markers of the oxidative stress from the periodontal disease are increased both at salivary level and also at plasmatic level. Among these are also 8 – hydroxydeoxyguanosine and thiobarbituric acid. Also it does not represent an etiologic factor, the oxidative stress from the periodontal disease contributes to its aggravation and from here the possible beneficial effects of the antioxidants in the treatment and prophylaxis of the aggressive forms.
