Abstract:

Pharmacogenetics is a borderline medical discipline which studies the interindividual variations of enzymes, receptors and transporters involved in drug metabolism. The development of human genomics determined the emergence of a new branch from pharmacogenetics: pharmacogenomics, which deals with the genetic polymorfisms that determine the variations in drug response. In the present paper we are presenting some general considerations about the role of this disciplines and also some of the most important advances in the field, as well as the trends, promises and limits emphasising their role in antimicrobial therapy.
