Aim: This study was carried out in order to investigate the actual oral health status of pre-school children in Bacau, aged 3 and 7 year old, the prevalence and the degree of severity of dental caries. Materials and methods: This study of dental caries was carried out on a sample of 269 children: 137 boys and 132 girls aged between 3-7 years old. The examined sujects were pre-school populations from Bacau county.
Results and discussion: Caries prevalence and mean dmft by age in Bacau, in 2007 were follows: 3 years = 76.87% (3.81); 4 years=66.30% (4.1 ), 5 years = 63.63% (4.13 ), 6 years = 79% (3.59 ), 7 years = 75% (4.41 ). Caries rates mirrored those of Bacau county with untreated lesions dominating all ages. At all ages, high proportion of children had severe patterns of dental caries. In 2007, about 72.16 % of children in all age groups were affected by dental caries. Conclusions: This study attempts to give indications
regarding the degree of severity of dental caries in affected children, in primary dentition. Results indicated an urgent need to increase awareness that tooth decay is a public health problem in Bacau county and increase acces to preventive dental services for preschool children.
