Abstract:

The intrinsic defence antioxidant mechanisms can be either enzymatic, or non-enzymatic. The enzymatic antioxidants include superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase, while the non-enzymatic antioxidants include vitamins E and C, and reduced
glutathione Dietary supplementation of vitamin C increases plasma vitamin E levels and the administration of vitamin E enhances the plasma levels of ascorbate and – tocopherol is depending on erythrocyte glutathione levels. Antioxidant components in red wine, which contains
flavonoids and grapefruit probably because its reach content in vitamin C have anti-inflammatory effects, which seems to neutralize the negative effects of smoking. The green tea and in a lower extent, the black tea contain the most powerful natural antioxidants, catechins, which act through the inhibition of redox-sensitive transcription factors and through the inhibition of the enzyme inducible nitric oxide synthase.
