Abstract:

In modern society, the esthetic image is considered to be a condition of professional and social success. Dental medicine has followed this direction by improving the esthetic quality of the materials and by extending their applications beyond the dental pathology, in the aria of esthetic rehabilitation of the smile. Direct veneering is one of these applications, useful not only for the treatment of the dental pathology (dental lesions and anomalies of position, shape, color) but also for improving the esthetic appereance. Veneers using plastic restorative materials are less used in dental practice than indirect esthetic rehabilitation methods. This technique still has many advantages, ones of the most important being the more conservative preparation, the reduced time of treatment and the decreased cost because of the elimination of laboratory work. Direct veneering allows the immediate comparison with the natural adjacent teeth; therefore, it would be possible to reproduce exactly the shade, morphology and texture details and to operate immediately the necessary changes. This paper describes the indications and limits of this technique, the advantages and disadvantages comparing with indirect veneers and the methods used to improve the esthetic result.
