Abstract:

Objective: The present study aims at evidencing the correlations established between the risk factors and the incarceration medium, together with the characteristics of odonto-periodontal therapy in persons deprived of liberty.
Materials and method: The study, performed on a group of incarcerated people, analyzed the manner of psycho-protective approaching of the imprisoned person, the role of the physician-patient communication during the therapy, identification of the risk factors to which they are exposed, calculation of the caries and periodontal indices – both at the beginning of the treatment and during its development, treatment of the periodontal diseases and follow up of their evolution.
Results: The risk factors have a negative influence upon the people involved in the study, even after the treatment, as both the carious and the periodontal diseases show an unfavourable evolution. Periodontal and, generally, oral health prophylaxy plays an important part in preventing caries and periodontal affections, a periodical medical check up being essential. Conclusions: The penitentiary medium has a negative influence upon the oro-dentary health condition and life quality of the inmates.
