Abstract:

The aim of the paper was to prepare carrageenan-based nanocapsules by immobilizing a previously synthesized antimicrobial model drug with potential application in the treatment of various microorganisms known as causing infections at oral and skin level. The particles were synthesized following a double crosslinking by the double emulsion method. Capsules behaviour in aqueous medium was evaluated, showing a rather high swelling degree and a drug release efficiency of 77% after 9 hrs. The model drug in both free state and encapsulated into carrageenan nanocapsules presented good and moderate biological activity against the development of microbial strains of Bacillus cereus, Bacillus subtillis, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecalis.
