Abstract:

Inflammatory processes in the maxillofacial region represent a pressing issue in surgeon’s daily work, due to the high number of patients with this diagnosis and also because of the severe complications that may occur, lethal ones included. Besides the usual complications, a maxillofacial surgeon should be careful with patients diagnosed with inflammatory processes that have other comorbidities, falling into the category of medically complex patients. There are multiple diseases that require special attention in the course of perioperative management and there is still the need to further review the existing data in order to present the best protocols for each case. The present article aims at emphasizing the specific aspects in the management of cardiac disease sufferers. A complete blood count, bleeding time and complete metabolic panel are crucial prior to the surgical intervention, as well as an electrocardiogram and blood pressure monitoring. Based on the diagnosis, other lab results may be required but, most importantly, a team approach is encouraged in all complex cases, for obtaining best results in patients’ evolution.
