Abstract:

Williams-Beuren syndrome (WBS), the 7q11.23 microdeletion syndrome, is a rare genetic condition with a complex phenotype which includes dismorphic features, developmental delay, a characteristic behavior, and cardiovascular disorders. Dental anomalies are very common in WBS patients, including hypodontia, missing of some permanent teeth, abnormal teeth morphology, caries, excessive interdental spacing, and deep bite malocclusion. These anomalies may raise specific problems related to oral evaluation and interventions. An important aspect is represented by the increased risk of cardiac arrest in WBS patients during general anesthesia. The paper reviews the literature data about dental characteristics in WBS patients. Also, some aspects regarding prevention measures of dental complications in these patients will be discussed.
