Abstract:

It is a well-known fact that the orthodontic treatment has the potential to cause destructions of the hard and soft tissues at the level of the oral cavity, from the very moment of insertion up to the end of the treatment. Enamel demineralization around brackets is unavoidable if oral hygiene is precarious. Plaque accumulation reduces the pH, so that the first white spot lesions may set in. Oral hygiene during fixed orthodontic treatment with metallic brackets is the most important aspect, being the only element that can prevent white spot lesions and all the other problems that may arise due to the dental plaque. This paper evaluated the susceptibility to develop white spot lesions in patients with fixed orthodontic appliances, in case of a minor anomaly, without other dental major complications, by comparing the results with a control group made up of patients with similar anomalies, but with no orthodontic treatment.
