Abstract:

This study aims at analyzing and establishing the risk of developing odontogenic sinus pathology in 232 patients who attended a private clinic between 2013 and 2017 for a common dental treatment, performed by panoramic x-rayanalysis. The following items were assessed: the relationship of sinus teeth with the sinus cavity, the presence of odontal and periodontal lesions, the presence of complete and incomplete endodontic treatments, the presence of periapical pathology. Each dento-periodontal element in the lateral maxillary area was analysed in terms of risk grades and type of risk of odontogenic sinusitis appearance for the entire study batch, as well as by age and sex. The risk of odontogenic sinusitis is increased in premolars, due to the intimate relationship of the root apices and to endodontic treatments; in molars, the periodontal disease is present, due to the same intimate relationship of the root apices. Sex involvement proves the predisposition for odontogenic maxillary sinusitis in females, in the case of molars, and in males in premolars, the most susceptible age range being between 35 and 55 years.
