Abstract:

Dental identification is the study of forensic odontology, representing a superior method of identification, due to the increased resistance of teeth to the action of physical, mechanical, chemical and thanatological factors. In recent years, forensic odontology is facing a wide recognition because of the crucial role the discipline has in many legal and criminal cases, so that experts in the field are constantly in search of more accurate and advanced methods. The present paper is a literature review aiming at highlighting the techniques used in dental identification and at emphasizing the important role of teeth. Dental identification plays a major role in forensic identification processes. The connection of Romanian forensic and legal medicine to a system is fundamental, further research being needed to strengthen the forensic odontology investigation outcomes and to establish the standard protocols and international communication.
