Abstract:

The present study analyzes the role of saliva in oral health. In dental erosion, an important role is played by several proteins present in saliva and in the formed pellicle. Saliva is the most important biological factor which affects the progression of dental erosion, so that knowledge of the biochemical properties involved in its protective role may determine preventive measures capable of meliorating the effect of dental erosion. Saliva offers protection against acid erosion in many ways – one of them referring to the influence of the pellicle, and other to its diluting action upon acids. Saliva swallowing causes a gradual elimination of acids.
