Abstract:

Pain, one of the determining factors of orthodontic treatment relief, can be controlled by several means, the most common being the use of analgesics. The need for drug use can be caused by the level of physical pain, low self-esteem, age, maternal education, a positive attitude toward self-care, over-confidence in medication knowledge. Age can influence orthodontic tooth movement and patients` perception over the level of orthodontic pain they experience. Adolescents proved to be more likely to use painkillers to alleviate pain, compared to preadolescents and adults. Adults seemed to experience higher levels of pain after adjusting their orthodontic appliance. Patients who experience moderate to high intensity pain tend to use analgesics.
