Abstract:

Introduction. The term Endo-Perio Lesions (EPL), affecting simultaneously both pulp and periodontium, emerged decades ago to designate a specific disease condition. EPL is one of the rare and challenging clinical conditions, because tooth prognosis might severely compromise diagnosis and treatment protocol, requiring multi-disciplinary evaluation, especially when severe periodontal attachment and osseous structure losses occur. Materials and methods: The here presented questionnaire-based survey was elaborated in the Kabul Medical University of Sciences (KUMS) – Dentistry Faculty in January 2021, among undergraduate dental students, based on Sambandhan et al. study; it included multiple choice questions. There were 213 volunteer participants. Results and discussion: Over 65% of participants were aware of pulp and periodontium communication pathways. 40.4% of them were aware of Simon et al. classification, and almost 42.3% of them were aware of T. denticule. Almost 47% of participants were aware of the treatment sequence of primary endodontics, followed by periodontal lesions. In cases of primary periodontal and secondary endodontic lesions, most participants (65.2%) think that periodontal therapy can be the first line of treatment and only 33.8% of them were aware of treatment sequence. To the question about treatment sequence of combined lesion, 29.57% of participants have selected endodontic therapy, followed by periodontal therapy, while 29.57% have selected both. Conclusions: Most of the students are not aware of the EPL classification, bacterial source of infection and treatment sequence.
