THE USE OF BLEACHING AGENTS TO AESTHETICALLY TREATED NON-CAVITATED DISCOLORED LESIONS. A SCOPING REVIEW

Authors: Sarah S. Al-ANGARI

Abstract:

This scoping review aimed at investigating the efficacy of bleaching as a non-invasive aesthetic treatment option for non-cavitated white spot lesions (WSLs) and stained arrested caries lesions (ACLs). The review was done per PRISMA extension for scoping reviews. The eligibility criteria focused on the color outcome of bleached WSLs and ACLs, written in English, with no date restriction. A Medline search was conducted in the databases of PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Cochrane Library and Google Scholar, until April 2021. Fourteen articles (n= 1,114) from 409 data sources met the eligibility criteria. Most of the studies resulted in a clinical perceptible color change (ΔE >3.3) that satisfactorily camouflaged WSLs and ACLs. Bleaching is considered an effective conservative option to treat such lesions. However, clinicians should carefully select cases, as the at-home bleaching protocol and non-metallic stains had better outcomes compared to metallic stains and in-office bleaching protocols.
