Given the recent advances in 3D printing, MRI or CT images can now be used to manufacture 3D anatomical models of patient specific tissues. 3D printing is a process by which digital models (CAD) are converted into physical models through a layer-by-layer manufacturing procedure. Patient-specific printed models for the anatomical regions requiring surgical repair can offer surgeons a better view on the defective tissue, thus supporting in several ways preparation of the surgical procedure. Accordingly, given the growing interest in 3D printing of anatomical models, the present literature review aims at evaluating their clinical impact and benefits in oral-maxillofacial surgery.
