Abstract:

Patients with severe coronavirus (COVID-19) symptoms usually suffered from other comorbidities such as diabetes, hypertension, obesity and cardiac diseases. Periodontitis is considered a risk factor for the progression of many systemic diseases as well as for the severity of COVID-19. The aim of this case report is to highlight the effect of stage IV grade C periodontitis, along with systemic diseases in progression and severity of COVID-19 infection. A 48 year-old female, diagnosed with COVID -19 in August 2020, admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU), suffered from multiple complications such as uncontrolled diabetes, overweight, the lab values showing high inflammatory markers. Oral cavity examination showed an advanced stage of periodontitis. The interplay between the risk factors can increase the progression of symptoms. Improving oral hygiene may reduce the morbidity and severity of COVID-19.
