This literature review systematizes data on the synthesis and characterization of nanoemulsions based on essential oils, on the methods for nanoemulsions characterization, and on the peculiarities of essential oils. The main objective was to identify the potential oral applications of nanoemulsions based on essential oils, as well as their antimicrobial properties. To this end, 284 articles that met the eligibility criteria applied to the title, abstract and content, together with their reference bibliography, were screened.
