SIGNIFICANCE OF BONE GRAFTS IN THE OSTEOTOME SINUS ELEVATION TECHNIQUE. WHAT DOES LITERATURE TELL US?

Authors: Waleed ALIBRAHIM

Abstract:

Introduction: Osteotome sinus floor elevation (OSFE) is a technique commonly performed in the posterior maxilla. The significance of applying bone substitutes is a matter of controversy. The aim of this literature review was to evaluate the influence of bone graft on the success rate of dental implants placed by the OSFE technique.Materials and methods: An electronic search was performed on Pubmed for all articles published in English, between 2000 and 2021, comparing the osteotome sinus elevation technique with or without bone grafting, and including only clinical studies performed on test and control groups of at least 10 patients.  Results and discussion: 7 studies comparing survival rate, marginal bone loss, endosinus bone gain were included. Conclusions: The literature review showed that the OSFE technique with incorporation of bone substitutes brought no advantage over that without bone grafts.
