ASSESSMENT OF PERI-IMPLANT HEALTH AMONG DENTAL IMPLANTS PLACED IN EDENTULOUS SITES. A HOSPITAL-BASED RETROSPECTIVE STUDY

Abstract:

Introduction: Early development of infection in peri-implant tissues is often a cause of implant failure, as clinically assessed by checking bleeding on probing,redness, swelling and presence of pain. Radiographically, bone loss can be seen early in such cases. This can occur due to several possible host-related factors, such as periodontal disease or surgery related to a poor sterilisation protocol. Aim: To assess the peri-implant health among the implants placed in a private dental hospital in Chennai, India. Materials and methods. A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted using 712 samples from the Department of Implantology after reviewing and analysing the data of 86,000 patients between June 2019 and March 2021. Microsoft Excel® was used to tabulate the collected data. The variables assessed were age, gender, presence of infection and site of implant placement. Chi square analysis was done with the level of significance set at p<0.05. Appropriate graphs, tables and charts were constructed using SPSS for a clear representation of the results obtained. Results and discussion: The sample had a gender distribution of 57.81% males and 42.19% females, 16.97% among 20-30-year-olds, 22.9% in 31-40-years-olds, 23.72% in 41-50-year-olds, 22.62% in 51-60-year-olds and 13.79% in 61+ year-olds. The most (27.29%) common site of implant placement was sextant 4, specifically in relation to the first molar. 99.58% of implant sites showed no signs of infection, and 0.43% of them showed poor peri-implant health post recovery period. Conclusions: Within the limits of the study, it can be concluded that post recovery peri implant health was good in 99.58% of implant sites, poor values being noticed in only 0.43% of implant cases.
