Abstract:

Introduction: Poor oral hygiene maintenance due to cognitive disturbances, and motor impairment in Parkinson patients influence daily oral hygiene care, resulting in periodontal diseases. Some studies report a relationship between Parkinson’s disease and periodontitis. Hence, the present interactome network map analysis assesses the common pathways involved in periodontitis and Parkinson’s disease.Materials and methods: The present study uses NCBI GEO datasets and the GEO2R online analysis tool, and analyzes the genes expressed. The gene network was constructed by merging genes expressed in periodontitis and Parkinson’s disease, and the interconnecting genes were identified and ranked using GeneMANIA. To delineate the biological implication of the significant gene associated with this interactome, gene enrichment analysis for Gene Ontology (GO) terms was performed using PantherDB pathway. Results and discussion: The differentially expressed genes were uploaded onto the GSEA software. 20 hub genes from the gene set database were identified, out of which 5 hub genes were significantly expressed. Gene enrichment analysis was performed for the hub genes expressed and the biological and molecular functions of the hub genes were studied. Conclusions: The present study evidences a positive gene-gene interaction between Parkinson’s disease and periodontitis, mediated by Cadherin pathway activation and 5-HT1 receptor signaling.
