RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ORTHODONTIC CROWDING AND PERIODONTAL STATUS. A CASE CONTROL STUDY IN SAUDI POPULATION

Abstract:

To evaluate the relationship between crowding and periodontal health status among Saudi population, individuals without previous history of orthodontic, periodontal or prosthodontic treatment (crowding group; n=200) and controls (n=200) were included in the study performed between March 2017 to March 2018. Periodontal parameters were assessed clinically and radiographically. The crowding group had significantly higher mean debris index, calculus index, Russel’s Periodontal Index, and bleeding index scores (p<0.05) vs the controls. All scores increased with crowding severity. The crowding group also had a higher periodontal probing depth (PD) vs the control group. With few exceptions, a linear relationship was observed between the level of crowding and PD measures. Furthermore, the crowding group showed significantly greater cemento-enamel junction to alveolar bone crest across both lower and upper teeth vs the control group (p<0.05). This study shows a positive association between crowding and periodontal disease, suggesting that orthodontics could be a feasible option for patients with pronounced crowding.
