Spirulina, a blue-green algae with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties, has been investigated as an adjunct therapy in oral health. This review summarizes clinical evidence on the effects of spirulina on gingivitis and periodontitis, focusing on plaque reduction, decreased gingival inflammation, and enhanced tissue healing. Existing studies indicate that spirulina-based mouthwashes and gels can provide benefits comparable to conventional antimicrobial agents, with a more favorable safety profile. However, most studies have been conducted on small sample sizes and short durations, highlighting the need for long-term research and standardized protocols. Spirulina represents a promising option for integration into preventive and therapeutic strategies for oral diseases.
