Introduction: Traumatic lesions of the oromaxillofacial area, through their frequency and evolutionary and treatment particularities, have medical implications that pose problems of medico-legal interpretation and legal
classification, constituting a public health problem.
Objective: To evaluate oromaxillofacial injuries and post-traumatic consequences, with their medico-legal, legal and social implications, as well as to analyze the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on oromaxillofacial injuries. Materials
and methods: The present prospective, analytical study statistically demonstrates the clinical and medico-legal particularities of these injuries, on a number of 485 cases with oromaxillofacial injuries, out of a total of 850 medico-
legal expertises with traumatic bodily injuries, taken over from the IML (Institute of Legal Medicine) archive, 2019-2023. OMF injuries were evaluated through the prism of the demographic profile, mechanisms and circumstances
of occurrence and post-traumatic consequences, with reference to the pandemic period, as well. Results and discussion: The study shows an increase in the incidence of aggression, especially those involving hard body blows
(41.6%), especially in females under 35 years of age, and an increase in severity, especially in the case of oromaxillofacial (OMF) trauma associated with TBI. These increases were more pronounced during the pandemic.
Conclusions: The study suggests the need to implement in practice some guidelines and protocols for clinical and forensic evaluation and interpretation, useful for specialists in the medical, forensic and legal fields.
