The present study, evaluating the prevalence of posterior crossbite in different stages of dentition development in a Romanian orthodontic gorup of patients, was performed on 384 orthodontic patients (164 males and 220 females), with ages between 6-23 years. The data obtained from orthodontic records was analyzed versus the social parameters, type of dentition, Angle Class of malocclusion and occlusal status. Statistical evaluation was done with a SPSS 16.0 package. The prevalence of patients with posterior crossbite was of 10.94%, the unilateral form being more frequent (8.34%). The prevalence of posterior crossbite was increased in female patients (6.52%) aged over 12 years (4.43%), from urban area (3.38%), with mixed dentition (6.52%) and with Angle Class I (4.95%), Class II division 1 (3.12%) and Class III (2.34%) malocclusions and mandibular shift (6.25%). Statistically significant high correlations were found between the posterior crossbite and Angle Class of malocclusion and the mandibular shift (p=0.000).
