Abstract:

On 1 October 1919, the ”Superior Dacia University”, including the Faculty of Medicine, was founded in Cluj. This represented the beginning of higher medical education in Romanian language, which included among basic specialties a newly created specialty: dentistry. The teaching staff was formed of the most valuable doctors in the country and of some working abroad, such as doctor Gheorghe Bilaşcu – a Romanian born in Maramureş, trained and having a brilliant career as a dentist in the capital of Hungary – who did not hesitate to give up social position, money, connections and who, after returning to Romania, proved to be providential for the destiny of Romanian medical education.
