Scaling and root planning (SRP) is a well-established concept for the treatment of periodontal diseases, once accepted that plaque, calculus, endotoxins and necrotic cementum must be removed from the root surface. Necrotic cementum is thought to be the part of the cementum (the outer layer) impregnated with endotoxins from the bacterial plaque, so that root planning is also used to vigorously remove this surface layer of cementum. Although additional procedures that improve the health of the periodontium (laser treatment of the periodontal pocket) exist, there is no procedure that completely replaces the SRP.
