Periodontal regeneration is the total restoration of supporting structures of teeth, including periodontal ligament, gingival connective tissue, cementum and alveolar bone destroyed by trauma or destructive periodontal disease. In recent years, therapeutic techniques have emphasised the restoration of damaged periodontal tissues by creating a new attachment. Growth factors (GFs) are naturally occurring biological mediators that control important cellular activities in tissue repair and regeneration processes. Recent developments in cellular and molecular biology have allowed for a better understanding of the roles of GFs and of their involvement in the various stages of wound healing. The focus of this narrative review is on a few particular growth factors and on their possible significance in periodontal wound healing and regeneration.
