Abstract:

Patients with Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) and Parkinson’s Disease Dementia with Lewy bodies (PDD-LB) present a high burden of oral and dental pathology due to cognitive decline, motor impairment, autonomic dysfunction, and polypharmacy. Oral diseases in these populations are frequently underdiagnosed and undertreated, despite their significant impact on nutrition, systemic health, and quality of life. This article provides an overview of the mechanisms linking neurodegeneration and oral health, common dental conditions, systemic consequences, challenges in dental management, and evidence-based clinical recommendations. Emphasis is placed on interdisciplinary care and the role of caregivers in prevention and long-term management. Keywords: Alzheimer’s Disease, Parkinson’s Disease Dementia with Lewy Bodies, dental problems.
