Abstract:

Background and aim: Monolithic restorations with various compositions and reinforcements are introduced on the market, and commonly used among clinicians. Therefore, it is important to have sufficient information on survival the and complication rates of these materials. Since few recent studies are available in this regard, the current study aimed at evaluating the survival and complication rates of single monolithic crowns and fixed partial dentures. Materials and methods: Databases of PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, EBSCO, and Embase were searched for systematic literature between 2016 and August 2021.  Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) was used to assess the quality of the cohort studies. Data extraction was performed by two blinded and independent reviewers, from the abstract and full text of the included studies. 95% confidence intervals for effect size with fixed effect model and in-variance method were calculated. To deal with potential heterogeneity, random effects were used, I2 showing heterogeneity. Meta-analysis was performed using Stata/MP v.16 software (the fastest version of Stata).  Results and discussion: During the review, duplicate studies were removed initially, and then 434 abstracts were selected; two authors reviewed the full text of 73 studies, from which 9 were selected. Among monolithic single crowns, the survival rate was 98%, while the biological and technical complication rates were 2% and 2%, respectively. Monolithic fixed partial dentures showed a survival rate of 90%, and biological and technical complication rates of 5% and 5%, respectively. Conclusions: The present systematic review and meta-analysis study showed high survival and low complication rates for single monolithic crowns; these results are true for monolithic fixed partial dentures with low differences.
